Paula Abdul Invited to Stay on American Idol

After talking in the spring about possibly moving on from American Idol, Paula Abdul is now optimistic she’ll be back for another season of FOX’s mega-hit.

“I’ve been invited to stay the duration of the show, however long it lasts,” Abdul told the Associated Press.

Her contract has not yet been renewed after it expired with the eighth season, which crowned Kris Allen the winner, and the new details have yet to be worked out.

During an interview on the set of Drop Dead Diva — a new Lifetime series, premiering July 12th, that will feature her in an episode as a different sort of judge — Abdul called the Idol panel a “dysfunctional family of sorts.”

“I’m the nurturing mom, Simon [Cowell]’s the disapproving dad, and Randy [Jackson]’s the cool brother,” she said. “It’s been an interesting journey. It’s something that I’ll always would want to be a part of.”

Abdul didn’t mention newlywed Kara DioGuardi, who joined the show as a judge just last season.

After some wondered if DioGuardi was brought as a possibly replacement, Abdul said in April, “I don’t think anyone [can replace me] … First of all, Kara says ‘I could never replace you.’ And I said whenever there is change it’s not about replacing anybody; it’s about possibly moving on.”
