The illustrious top 10 of So You Think You Can Dance’s fifth season saw its first voter-decided cut on Thursday’s episode.
Having avoided the bottom three all season with popular partner Evan, Randi was unable to escape it after a mediocre paso doble, a bad wig, and a chemistry-lacking partnership with Kupono who was no stranger to the bottom three himself — and even seemed content to have made it this far. Both were the first dance casualties of the final lap.
“Some styles need a little more time,” explained judge Debbie Allen, who praised both dancers while arguing that routines with tap, ballet and other styles need more refining.
Also in the bottom four: Melissa, who now, no matter how well she dances, must compete against Jeanine, Kayla and Janette, and — this was a shocker — Ade, who week after week has been wowing everyone.
“It is turning into a personality contest at this point,” added Allen, who pointed out that sometimes it might just come down to some very small detail that makes all the difference to voters. “Maybe it’s time for [Ade] to take that little pick out of his head and maybe just change it up a little bit.”
As the stakes get higher, the musical acts get bigger — and Thursday’s show featured an opening act set by Wade and Amanda Robson set to Janet Jackon’s “So Much Betta” and an explosive performance by the Black Eyed Peas, who rocked the house, singing their hit “I Got A Feeling” from The E.N.D.
In other SYTYCD news, a well deserved congratulations is in order for Emmy nominees: Tyce Diorio, Emmy-winner Mia Michaels (the third nod for her), Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo, and Dmitry Chaplin!
Said an ecstatic Diorio after the show: “I’m excited because all of my friends are doing such exciting work and … we’re all in a category and there will be one winner, but, really, you feel you’ve all won together. It’s so great!”
