For many gay men who grew up in the 70s, "Charlie's Angels" was a ray of light every Wednesday night.
With its three kick-ass heroines (Farrah Fawcett, Jacklyn Smith and Kate Jackson) going undercover to fight crime and solve murders, and still have time to look fabulous doing it, the show was escapist corn of the sweetest kind. Of course, it was only a matter of time before a bunch of gay men adopted it and made it their own.
"Chico's Angels" began as a stage show in the basement of a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles' trendy Silver Lake neighborhood. It is about "three little Latin girls who went to the police academy... and didn't graduate." Through five years and four episodes, these Angels (Kay Sedia, Frieda Lay and Chita Parol) have fought crime in cha-cha heels and provided belly-laughs galore with their perfect comic timing and their obvious fondness for that '70s show that inspired them.
Like everyone else, we are extremely saddened by Farrah Fawcett's ongoing struggle with cancer, so we're going to lighten the mood a little bit by posting below four bite-size webisodes from Chico's Angels. And stay tuned for the online debut of two brand new webisodes this summer on their website at http://www.chicosangels.com/.
