Thursday, famed New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn wrote a blog post in defense of Lady Gaga and her latest shenanigans—namely her new potentially blasphemous video for "Alejandro" and the typically attention-grabbing ensemble she wore to her sister's high school graduation. Horyn wrote that she admires Gaga's constant exploration of fashion, "whether she is backtracking through Madonna country or making more abstract connection to art and film."
Is that what's going on with Gaga these days? It certainly seems that the pop juggernaut is having an early-'90s Madge moment, what with the sassy bleach blond crop, exposed cone bras and animal-print bustiers.
The question, then, is why? Lady Gaga became famous for her flirtation with the avant garde, and while a few critics sniffed about similarities to Grace Jones, she managed to build a brand on that originality. The Madonna-miming is most certainly intentional—so just what point do you think Gaga is trying to make?
