Glee's Chris Colfer Chats with Rolling Stone

Chris Colfer, who plays gay teenager Kurt Hummel on Glee, is featured in the special television issue of Rolling Stone in a section called “The best characters in TV.”

He recalls in an interview kids shouting “Fag!” or “Freak!” in the hallway at school.

“When you’re in that situation, you learn to think on your feet. I’d always respond, ‘Delinquent!’ or some other word they couldn’t understand.”

The article tells us that Chris grew up in Clovis, California (near Fresno) which he describes as “conservative, hot and flat.” His parents were die-hard Republicans who sent him to Jesus camp and took him to the local rodeo dressed “in these horrible, horrible little cowboy outfits. I still can’t listen to country music without recalling my trauma.”

He hit the bad luck trifecta in school: fat, braces, gay: “I was the bottom of the food chain. Very, very frumpy.”

Of Kurt he said: “I would just like to see him be happy and to keep inspiring the kids that watch him. … I see these gay characters on other programs, and they’re always loud and flamboyant. In high school – especially in a conservative town – someone wouldn’t be like that. That’s why I made Kurt more internal and superior, rather than external and annoying.”

Chris, who graduated from high school himself just over two years ago, enrolled in Fresno City College and would drive down to Los Angeles for auditions. He quickly landed Glee and worried what the folks back in Clovis would think of him playing a gay teen – he was not yet publicly out himself: “I’m glad I had that fear because it made the character that much more real.”

The Joy of Vampire Sex: 'True Blood' on Rolling Stone's Latest Cover

The following is an excerpt of an article from the September 2, 2010 issue of Rolling Stone. This issue is available today on newsstands, and Friday, August 20th online via Rolling Stone's premium subscription plan.

The idea of celibate vampires is ridiculous, True Blood creator Alan Ball says. "To me, vampires are sex," he says. "I don't get a vampire story about abstinence. I'm 53. I don't care about high school students. I find them irritating and uninformed."

On his show, every available orifice is used for intercourse: gay, straight, between humans and supernatural beings, and supernatural being on supernatural being, whether he be werewolf, dog or an enormous Minotaur-looking being called a maenad. None of the sex is quite as good as vampire sex, though, which can happen at the astonishing rhythm of 120 bpm while simultaneously devouring one's neck and making your eyes roll back into your head.

Says Stephen Moyer — who plays Bill Compton, the undead Southern Civil War Veteran — "If we go from a base level, vampires create a hole in the neck where there wasn't one before. It's a de-virginization — breaking the hymen, creating blood and then drinking the virginal blood. And there's something sharp, the fang, which is probing and penetrating and moving into it. So that's pretty sexy. I think that makes vampires attractive." He laughs a little. "Plus, Robert Pattinson is just hot, right?"

To read Vanessa Grigoriadis' story in full and read about why sex is the centerpiece of the show, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer’s on-set romance and how Alexander Skarsgard channels his inner evil, you must be a subscriber to All Access.

John Mayer: Shirtless on Latest Rolling Stone

John Mayer gets shirtless for the new issue of Rolling Stone, on newstands today. Here’s what the 32-year-old singer shared:

On preferring Continuum to his 2009 disc Battle Studies: ”I know that I’m supposed to say that my newest is the best one. Bulls—.”

On his split with ex-girlfriend Jennifer Aniston: ”I’ve never really gotten over it. It was one of the worst times of my life… I have this weird feeling, a pride thing, for the people I’ve had relationships with. What would I be saying to Jen, who I think is f—ing fantastic, if I said to her, ŒI don’t dislike you. In fact, I like you extremely well. But I have to back out of this because it doesn’t arc over the horizon. This is not where I see myself for the rest of my life,
this is not my ideal destiny.”

On his sex life becoming an endless loop of new girls rejecting him in clubs: ”Blowing me off is the new sucking me off!”

On finding a girlfriend: “Do you think it’s going to take meeting someone who I admire more than I admire myself? But isn’t it also about a beautiful vagina? Aren’t we talking about a matrix of a couple of different things here? Like, you need to have them be able to go toe-to-toe with you intellectually. But don’t they also have to have a vagina you could pitch a tent on and just camp out on for, like, a weekend? Doesn’t that have to be there, too? The Joshua Tree of vaginas? …I’ll be happy when I close out this life-partner thing. Think of how much mental capacity I’m using to meet the right person so I can stop giving a f–k about it.”

On his relationships: “All I want to do now is f–k the girls I’ve already f–ked, because I can’t fathom explaining myself to somebody who can’t believe I’d be interested in them, and they’re going, ŒBut you’re John Mayer! So I’m going backwards to move forward. I’m too freaked out to
meet anybody else.”

On masturbation : “I am the new generation of masturbator. I’ve seen it all. Before I make coffee, I’ve seen more butt holes than a proctologist does in a week.”

On if he pleasures himself daily: “I don’t like that question, because it seeks to make me sound strange if I say ‘ŒYes, but of course I do.’ I mean, I have masturbated myself out of serious problems in my life. The phone doesn’t pick up because I’m masturbating. And I have excused myself at the oddest times so as to not make mistakes. If Tiger Woods only knew when to jerk off. It has a true market value, like gold bullion. First of all, I don’t jerk off because I’m horny. I’m sort of half-chick. It’s like District 9. I can fire alien weapons. I can insert a tampon. No, I do it because I want to take a brain bath. It’s like a hot whirlpool for my brain, in a brain space that is 100 percent agreeable with itself.”

On the paparazzi: “I’ll be honest with you. All this weird s–t about me? All this strangeness? I wouldn’t have a music career without it. But I am at odds with myself. I have some presence of psychological damage from the past 36 months. I have not had a woman appear in my dreams sexually without a paparazzi in the dream too. I can’t even have a wet dream without having to explain to someone who’s grinding on me, ŒWe can’t do this right now, because there’s a guy over there taking pictures.”

Yesterday, John tweeted, “Just read my Rolling Stone cover article. I’m still not sure if I would want to hang out with me. After 30 minutes of twirling my hair into a knot, I say ‘f–k it.’ You can’t go wrong if you tell the truth.”

Is Twilight's Taylor Lautner Gay?

Those rumors about Twilight beefcake star Taylor Lautner romancing the same-sex might have easily died down, at least for this press tour, if the entertainment media did its job and let celebrities stay in the closet. But they did not!

What's this about you being gay?, Rolling Stone magazine threw at Lautner for his cover story interview.

Supposedly dating Taylor Swift, Lautner isn't exactly making a convincing argument the pair are anything more than friends. He tells the magazine: "We instantly clicked. And she''s – she''s an amazing girl. Aside from being beautiful, she''s extremely funny, charismatic and fun to be around, and so we definitely get along. We"re close." Wow, we can feel the sexual tension!

And as for those rumors that he's gay?

Playing coy, Lautner would only say he's "possibly" dating someone, which could be Swift or somebody named Sean Fox Zastoupil, whose name has been curiously planted in B-list celeb blog reports as dating Lautner.

"I’m really big about, like, commitment. Loyalty is a major thing for me," he tells Rolling Stone. Except, the mag asked: “Another possibility is that maybe you’re just sort of discovering yourself …"

Lautner replies: "OK."

Rolling Stone: "… As a young person trying to figure out his sexual identity in the world."

Lautner: "OK. I see where you’re going. Interesting choice."

Rolling Stone: “It is a possibility."

Lautner: "There’s a lot of rumors out there."

Well that's certainly not a confirmation. But moreso, it's not a denial, which is usually the obvious choice for actors who are heterosexual, and the scripted choice for actors who are gay but playing heterosexual in public.

For now, Lautner is a 17-year-old actor with overnight success. We'd love to have him on our team but for now, we're comfortable speculating.
