Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress Turning Into Beef Jerky

One of the obvious problems with a dress made entirely out of meat is that it’s perishable.

So, after Lady Gaga premiered her fleshy outfit at last week’s MTV Video Music Awards, fans had to wonder: What would become of the famous meaty fashion after the show? No, it wasn’t grilled up and served with a case of red wine.

“The dress will go through a process where it becomes a sort of ‘jerky,’ ” the designer, Franc Fernandez, tells E! Online. But before you start salivating, be apprised that the jerky will not be available for tastings.

It will be “archived” for posterity, Fernandez says, telling MTV Style that he bought 50 pounds of meat and designed the dress over three days, refrigerating it in between sessions. Over time, the metamorphosis into jerky is natural, he adds. “The meat dries out, rather than rotting,” he says. “But it shouldn’t be worn again.”

And he’s not planning on designing another one. “There’s not going to be meat dresses in the future,” he says. “This was made for a specific purpose. It’s what it is.”

President Obama has found himself unwittingly in the middle of the awards show controversy between Kanye West and Taylor Swift after audio of chit-chat with a TV reporter leaked out on Tuesday.

Before a CNBC interview got underway Monday, the network's reporter John Harwood asked Obama if his daughters were upset that West had interrupted Swift's acceptance speech during Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards show, reports Politico.com.

"I thought that was really inappropriate," Obama answered, in what the White House believed to be off-the-record comments.

According to audio of the conversation, which hit the Web Tuesday afternoon, Obama went on to say, "You know, it was like, she's getting an award and what are you butting in? … The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person, she's getting her award and what's he doing up there? He's a jackass."

When White House aides and camera crew members gasped and laughed at the president's candor, Obama continued, "C'mon guys. Cut the president some slack. I've got a lot of other stuff on my plate."

Asked about the comments, White House spokesman Bill Burton said Tuesday: "Look, I'm not going to get into what the President had to say in an off-the-record conversation. But you should see what [White House chief of staff] Rahm [Emanuel] said about it."

Kanye West Apologizes to Taylor Swift

Kanye West is "SOOOOO SORRY" for interrupting Taylor Swift at Sunday’s Video Music Awards. The rapper posted an apology on his Web site’s blog after the show in his usual style of all caps.

"I'm in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment," he wrote. "Beyonce's video was the best of this decade . . . I'm sorry to my fans if I let you guys down . . . I'm sorry to my friends at MTV . . . I will apologize to Taylor."

The first winner of the night, Swift won best female video but was cut off during her acceptance speech by the rapper, who took her microphone and announced that fellow nominee Beyoncé had "one of the greatest videos of all time," in "Single Ladies."

"I was standing on stage and I was really excited because I'd just won the award and then I was really excited because Kanye West was on stage," Swift recalled after the show. "And then I wasn't excited anymore after that."

“I'm still very happy for Taylor," West wrote. "I really feel bad for Taylor and I’m sincerely sorry."

Beyoncé Shares VMA Moment with Taylor Swift

After Kanye West cut off best female video winner Taylor Swift at the Video Music Awards in New York on Sunday, the night’s top winner came to her rescue.

While accepting the Moonman for video of the year, Beyoncé Knowles invited Swift onto the stage so she could finish her speech, which West interrupted when she beat out Knowles on the night's first category.

"This is amazing," Knowles said. "I remember being 17-years-old, up for my first MTV award with Destiny’s Child and it was one of the most exciting moments of my life, so I would like for Taylor to come out and have her moment."

A smiling Swift came out and said, "Maybe we can try this again." She continued, thanking "all my fans on Twitter and MySpace and everyone who came out to my shows this summer."

The two winners, both in bright red dresses, hugged and left the stage together.

"It was so wonderful and gracious of her," Swift told reporters after the show. "She's always been a great person and I thought I couldn't love Beyoncé more and tonight happened and it was just wonderful."

While mentions of Kanye, who was not seen after the Swift incident, drew boos throughout the evening there were still plenty of positive notes. Some of the night's big winners included:

Best Rock Video: "21 Guns," Green Day. The band rocked out with fans during their subsequent performance, inviting dozens of audience members on stage with them.

Best Pop Video: Britney Spears's "Womanizer." The pop princess was on tour and, in a remotely video-taped acceptance speech, showed off a rockin' body reminiscent of the 2000 VMAs, when she stunned the crowd in a nude-colored bodysuit.

Best Male Video: T.I.'s "Live Your Life." T.I., who was also unable to accept his award – in this case, because he is serving a prison term.

Best Hip Hop Video: Eminem's "We Made You." The Detroit rapper modestly accepted his Moonman and thanked fans "for sticking by me."

Best New Artist: Lady Gaga, whose pa-pa-pa-pa-poker face was barely visible behind a bizarre lacy red mask. But as she accepted her Moonman, the pop star removed the accessory to thank her fans, and said her award was "for God, and for the gays."

Let's not forget surprise guest Madonna opened the show with a heartfelt tribute to Michael Jackson in which she called him, "so unique, so original, so rare. He was a king." And, Madonna added, he's got a loyal following of royal subjects.

"My sons, age 9 and 4, are obsessed with [him]. There's a whole lot of crotch-grabbing and moonwalking going on in my house."

After Madonna's speech, Janet Jackson took the stage at the end of a Michael Jackson medley. Performing in front of the"Scream" video that featured her and Michael, Janet channeled her late brother with his world-famous dance moves.

Taylor Swift Wins Best Female Video – Upsetting Kanye West

In true VMA form, the MTV awards show did not stick to the script.

The first winner of the night, Taylor Swift for best female video, was victim to this when she was rudely and quickly interrupted by Kanye West, who cut off her acceptance speech. He stole the microphone to announce that fellow nominee Beyoncé had "one of the greatest videos of all time," in "Single Ladies."

"I was standing on stage and I was really excited because I'd just won the award and then I was really excited because Kanye West was on stage," Swift recalled after the show. "And then I wasn't excited anymore after that."

For her part, Beyoncé appeared shocked by the outburst and the crowd booed the rapper. Off-camera, when West returned to his seat, audience members gave a still-stunned Swift (who was ushered off the stage before finishing her speech) a standing ovation.

After the incident, West, who was photographed drinking what looked like liquor on the red carpet, was not in his seat at Radio City Music Hall. A security guard said the rapper left the venue and would not be allowed to come back inside.

"I don't want to start anything," Swift said after the show when asked about hard feelings. "I had a great day tonight. I've been sent so many text messages and everyone's been really nice. I've had a really, really fun night."

Stars watching the show and tweeting immediately posted their thoughts on the incident. "Kanye needs to learn how to wait his turn," Zac Hanson wrote. "I am sure he will get plenty of mic time to say something stupid later in the show."

Country singer John Rich went even further with his tweet: “KanyeWest is a lowlife. He needs to have his @@@ kicked in the middle of the stage right now! What a piece of @@@@!!! Go TAYLOR SWIFT.”

Pink, who was also nominated for best female video, tweeted: “Kanye west is the biggest piece of s– on earth. Quote me.”

And Katy Perry followed suit: “F– U KANYE. IT'S LIKE U STEPPED 0N A KITTEN.”

Later, when Diddy and Jamie-Lynn Sigler took the stage to announce the best male video winner (rapper TI took it), they mentioned each of the nominees, including West, who was loudly booed by the crowd.

Before MTV settles into its annual teenybopper party known as the Video Music Awards, the ceremony will have a tender moment.

Janet Jackson will kick off the show tonight with a tribute to her late brother. Michael Jackson's death on June 25th was soon followed by the BET Awards (where Janet Jackson also appeared), but the King of Pop was more closely aligned with MTV, the music network.

Though MTV dragged its feet at first in showing the music videos of black artists, the network's meteoric rise in the 1980s came in tandem with Jackson's, whose music videos such as "Thriller" and "Bad" set the standard for the form.

The VMAs are familiar ground for the family. Janet Jackson has won nine VMAs. Michael Jackson famously opened the 1994 VMAs by kissing his then-wife, Lisa Marie Presley.

MTV will also premiere the trailer for "This Is It," the documentary about Jackson's preparations to hold 50 concerts in London.

"There's obviously lots of emotion around Michael and the memory of Michael, but I think it's going to be a pretty celebratory kind of night all around," said Dave Sirulnick, the show's executive producer and vice president of production at MTV. "It's all about that balance."

Sirulnick declined to give specifics to the Jackson tribute, but said that there's been "quite a few people working hard on it for quite a number of weeks now."

Since the Jacksons' heyday, though, the importance of videos has diminished greatly - a development ironically evident at the Video Music Awards. The network's trademark Moonmen trophies will be handed out (Beyonce and Lady Gaga lead the pack with nine nominations), but the awards will be a minor part of the spectacle.

Instead of a parade of speeches, the ceremony will include performances from Beyonce, Jay-Z, Green Day, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Muse and Pink. The rapper Wale and go-go band UCB will serve as the house band.

"Twilight," the teenage vampire sensation, will also be a constant presence. Footage from the eagerly anticipated sequel, "New Moon," will be presented by the film's stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. Ashley Greene, a co-star in "New Moon," will serve as a fashion correspondent on the red carpet.

"It's an opportunity for a worldwide audience to look in and see what is hot right now - what is at the epicenter today," said Sirulnick.

Last year's host, British comedian and actor Russell Brand, returns for a second time to preside over the festivities. In his first time hosting, Brand memorably mocked the Jonas Brothers' purity rings.

This year's VMAs will be broadcast live on MTV and MTV.com from Radio City Music Hall in New York, beginning at 9:00 pm (ET).

Janet Jackson to Honor Michael at VMAs

The Video Music Awards will pay homage to Michael Jackson when his sister Janet opens the show at Radio City Music Hall in New York on September 13th, MTV announced Tuesday.

It's not known whether Janet will perform – it's being billed as a "special appearance" – but her mere presence on stage is expected to give the show an emotional punch.

Michael, who died June 25th at age 50, was finally laid to rest last week in a mausoleum at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. His death was ruled a homicide – death at the hands of another – and several doctors and pharmacies are under investigation

The powerhouse singers scored a whopping nine MTV Video Music Award nominations each. The leading ladies tied for the most nominations in 2009, including video of the year and best female video.

"I'm excited and honored to be tied for most nominated for the VMAs," Beyoncé says. "I've been blessed this year to have 'Single Ladies' become a video people really connected with and responded to. I've spent so much time watching all the great versions people created all around the world. It's beautiful to feel you touch people and bring a song to life with a video."

The VMAs will take place on September 13th at locations around New York City, including Radio City Music Hall.

Britney Spears received seven nominations for her videos for "Womanizer" and "Circus" and a press release from MTV says, "Jay-Z, Green Day, Eminem, Kanye West and Coldplay will each find themselves vying for several moonmen on the big night."

For the second year in a row, British comedian Russell Brand will host the event, which will feature presenters Katy Perry, Ne-Yo and Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford as well as performances by Taylor Swift and Pink.

"Last year I got to jump out of a window at the VMAs in L.A.," Pink said. "This year I can't wait to blow the roof off Radio City in New York."

Here's the full list of nominations for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Vote online at MTV. Voting ends August 21st, although voting for Best New Artist will stay open through the show's airing.
