Ugly Betty actress Vanessa Williams has joined her former co-stars America Ferrera and Ana Ortiz on a crusade to bring the cancelled TV series to the big screen.
Williams gave her final performance as fashion boss Wilhelmina Slater in the April 14th series finale, and bid farewell to her castmates of four years.
She says, "We did not want to leave. Our last week, none of us wanted to leave the table. None of us wanted to finish the words we were saying."
Ortiz recently admitted she and America Ferrera are "open" to the idea of making an Ugly Betty film, and Williams is keen to join the pair's campaign.
She adds, "It was an extraordinary group of people, the ensemble was great, the directors were great - the writers - the whole team. It was unique. Yes, an Ugly Betty movie, absolutely."
Ugly Betty: The Movie? It just might happen, according to actress Ana Ortiz.
The ABC show’s finale aired Wednesday night, but that doesn’t mean it’s over for good. Ortiz, who played Betty’s sister Hilda Suarez, said the series may have the big screen in its future.
“There may be a movie,” Ortiz tells http://www.latina.com/. “It’s something that we’ve been talking about and it’s something that [Ugly Betty star] America Ferrera would really love to do. That woman has so much determination that I can’t imagine anything she puts her mind to not getting done.”
And Ortiz, 39, is totally up for playing Hilda again.
“Ugly Betty has been the most important thing I’ve ever done, easily,” she says. “I was able to do more with one character than I can ever imagine doing again — Hilda was hilariously funny and emotionally deep.”
America Ferrera is set to executive produce a modern-day version of Romeo & Juliet for MTV called Pedro & Maria!
The Ugly Betty actress, who turns 26 this coming weekend, will join former NBC co-chairman Ben Silverman and Procter & Gamble in the project and an interactive content platform to accompany it!
According to Deadline, viewers will be able to vote on the direction of the storyline and characters through Facebook and Twitter!
Just last night, I enjoyed a second viewing of this Wednesday's Ugly Betty episode which was highlighted by Justin (Mark Indelicato) coming out to his family by dancing with his boyfriend Austin at his mother’s wedding. It was so, so sweet!
Justin’s family looked on lovingly and allowed the teenager to come out on his own terms. It was in contrast to an earlier scene where the family found out about Austin through Hilda’s fiance, Bobby, who had seen the two boys kissing.
Hilda calls Betty and says excitedly: “Betty! Justin’s got a boyfriend!” The family then plans a surprise coming out party: “This one of the most important things that will ever happen to Justin and he needs to know that we accept him.”
Ignacio excitedly shows Betty the “starter kit” with info on PFLAG and GSLEN. (Sometimes I wonder about Ignacio himself, 'cause he's always so "gay" on the show.)
Anyway...Mark (Michael Urie) bursts in and tells them Justin might not be ready and says to the Suarez clan that Justin will come out when he comes out.
The episode also featured the return of Henry (Christopher Gorham) which is always such a treat.
But Henry and Betty both realize that the timing is not right for them to resume their relationship after Henry gets a job and is returning to New York. But they are going to remain friends. It is Daniel who Betty might have a future with at this point as he begins to finally realize that Betty really is his true love.
It was also fun to see Mark set up with a soap actor played by Bryan Batt who may end up being Amanda’s father!
But the final scene with Wilhelmina, Claire and Tyler (Neal Bledsoe) is one cliffhanger which we will never forget. Especially the look on Wilhelmina's face when Tyler pull the trigger to the gun he took from her home.
Who was shot? Well, we will have to watch next week's final episode of Ugly Betty to find out. I think it was Wilhelmina...but she's probably not dead!
Ugly Betty stars Mark Indelicato, Michael Urie, Ana Ortiz and America Ferrera bid farewell (in song, of course!) to their ABC series during the show's wrap party at N.Y.C. hotspot Room Service on Thursday.
Ugly Betty may be in its final season, but that doesn’t mean Betty herself is ready to let go.
“I’ve lived with this character who I’ve loved from day one and I have only grown to feel more connected to her,” the show’s star America Ferrera tells www.Parade.com. “Her entire journey was about a transformation, kind of coming into her womanhood and owning herself both physically and emotionally.”
And with four episodes left to shoot, Ferrera says, “I’m staying in denial for now — I’ll deal with all those emotions in a little bit. I imagine that when we finally wrap it’s not going to be a dry-eyed goodbye.”
But Ferrera says that playing Betty has changed her. “I never really pictured myself being on television. I couldn’t imagine a world coming along that would entice me enough to sign away years and years of my life to one character,” Ferrera says. “Then Betty came around. I was 21 when I started and I’ve learned so much and grown so much as a person.”
Vanessa Williams is angry at TV bosses for axing her hit comedy Ugly Betty, insisting the cast is "devastated" by the news.
The U.S. version of the series turned Emmy winner America Ferrera into a household name after it debuted in 2006.
But ABC executives announced last month the series' current fourth season will be its last.
And Williams is outraged programming bosses have scrapped the show just a year after uprooting the cast and crew from Los Angeles to film in New York.
She also blames them for failing to give the show a regular time slot for fans to follow.
Williams explains, "I gotta be honest, we're devastated. We're sad, we're not ready for it to end. We just moved to New York. We just got on a roll. Our season this year has been the best we've ever had. But numbers and ratings (were a concern). A lot of people couldn't even find us. We switched - we were put on Thursday then taken off then (we were on) Fridays, now we're finally on Wednesday nights. But we're sad."
The Ugly Betty season finale is set to air in April.
The news of the cancellation of ABC's "Ugly Betty" had barely hit the Internet on Wednesday when the phones of the representatives of star Eric Mabius started ringing off the hook.
With broadcast casting executives again in the hunt for good-looking thirtysomething leading men for pilots, Mabius' sudden availability made him instantly a hot commodity.
The early cancellation of "Betty" was done mostly to help the show's producers give it a proper ending, but the timing of the announcement also releases into the pilot talent pool a strong cast just as networks are starting to assemble this year's crop of series hopefuls.
"Betty" co-star Becki Newton, also in a sought-after category of beautiful 30-year-old comedic actresses, has additionally been inundated with calls, and Vanessa Williams, Michael Urie and Ana Ortiz also are in demand. It is not clear whether star America Ferrera would be open to another series as she is considering focusing on features full time.
To accommodate the "Betty" cast, which collectively landed two best ensemble SAG nominations, the producers of the show are trying to wrap production before the previously scheduled March 25 date so the actors can do pilots. Broadcast pilots generally film from the beginning of March through the end of April.
The "Betty" cast is among a couple of dozen actors from recently canceled and on-the-fence series that have development executives salivating.
"The networks and casting directors in Hollywood are looking very closely at the casts that have or will become available on shows like 'Dollhouse,' 'Ugly Betty,' 'Nip/Tuck,' 'Three Rivers' and 'Lost' and bubble shows like 'Scrubs' and 'Better Off Ted' to cherry-pick actors," said casting executive Marc Hirschfeld, famed for his work on "Seinfeld."
Networks often cast actors from bubble shows -- those whose future is iffy -- on pilots in second position, betting that those series won't return.
Expected to be in demand in second position are Jay Harrington, Portia de Rossi and Andrea Anders from "Ted," Eliza Coupe from "Scrubs" and Matt Long from "The Deep End."
Meanwhile, Sarah Chalke of the original "Scrubs" cast already is fielding multiple offers, as are three other lead actors from shows that recently wrapped their runs: Michael Chiklis from "The Shield," Christina Applegate from "Samantha Who?" and "Battlestar Galactica" alumna Katee Sackhoff, who is co-starring this season on Fox's "24."
Speaking of "24," the prospect of the real-time drama coming to an end is intriguing to casting execs.
"I'll put Mary Lynn Rajskub in a comedy in a heartbeat," a casting director said of the cult "24" co-star who recently showed off her comedic side on John Oliver's stand-up series on Comedy Central.
Alex O'Loughlin of the now-defunct "Rivers" is already being courted for new shows. But getting actors from ABC's "Lost," which is ending in the spring, could prove problematic. The hit show doesn't wrap production on its final season until April, making actors largely unavailable for pilots to the disappointment of network executives who would love to get Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway or Terry O'Quinn for a project.
What a glam bunch! Days before their ABC show returns for its fourth season, the cast of Ugly Betty – Vanessa Williams, America Ferrera, Michael Urie and Becki Newton – band together for a chatty evening at the New York Times TimesTalks series Monday in New York. Ugly Betty returns this Friday, October 16th.
America Ferrera checks her cell phone during a break from filming her television show Ugly Betty in New York City on Tuesday.
This could be the makeover that Betty Suarez gets this season — braces off and all!
“She looks a lot classier,” one source stated about Betty’s new look. “But she’s still far from perfect.”
Executive producer Silvio Horta added, “There’s going to be a progression in her look overall. It’ll still be Betty, but you’ll see some growth in that direction."
If they give the title character a radical change, as sources are reportedly seriously considering at ABC's Ugly Betty, does that include a title change to reflect the alteration? In other words, will Ugly Betty be the same show if Betty becomes a beauty?
Mike Ausiello is reporting that ABC has focus grouped a couple of scenes from the upcoming season in which Betty is remodeled to look more fashionable in the fashion world. As Mode's new associate features editor, she opts for some fancy new outfits and a less eclectic, eccentric look. She's also had her hair, brows and makeup redone ... no doubt after a trip to Hilda's beauty salon.
So the question then is this: if they glam up Betty's outside, will she still be the same on the inside, and will the cosmetic changes do anything to bolster the ratings of ABC's Cinderella sweetheart series? To be honest, I've been one who has long wondered why Betty's time at Mode hasn't affected how she looks and dresses. Her friendship with Christina should have been more influential, at least when it comes to fashion. And don't even get me started on the braces. Her mouth couldn't have needed full-frontal metal for more than three years! (By the way, the braces will definitely be off in Season Four!)
But one of the strengths of Ugly Betty has been that despite the eccentric exterior, Betty's beautiful soul always shows through. That's why she's not really a wallflower. She's had boyfriends and an active sexual life, and she interacts in a tough work environment successfully. Oh yes, she's mocked by Wilhelmina, Marc and Amanda, but they mock everyone! Betty's appearance has never held her back.
Perhaps the best thing the show could do for Betty is this: give her the makeover and then let her settle back into a more Ugly Betty style that blends the best of both worlds. In that way, it would reflect how it is in the real world ... People who have makeovers always slide back. It's inevitable. So, show Betty in the gorgeous dress with a fancy designer label, but have her carry a Hello, Kitty purse that she found on Queens Boulevard for $5!
The TV show starring America Ferrera as a Queens girl navigating the cutthroat world at Mode magazine returns to Thursday nights beginning April 30th. And there's more good news for fans of the ABC comedy: the show has been picked up for a fourth season.
So what's in store for Betty? How about a hot love triangle! When we last left our heroine, she was getting oh-so-close to Matt, a wealthy up-and-coming journalist. But we hear that Henry Grubstack, Betty's favorite accountant, is returning to the show for the season finale.
And Silvio Horta, the show's creator, hints that his visit isn't about the magazine's finances. "As Henry and Betty reconnect, it could potentially threaten her relationship with Matt," says Horta. It looks like Henry (played by Christopher Gorham) might be sticking around. "Chris has always been and always will be part of the Ugly Betty family," says Horta.
Gorham is definitely part of the Ugly Betty baby boom. He and wife Anel welcomed their third child – a girl named Alondra – in January. Eric Mabius had a son in December and Rebecca Romijn's twin girls arrived late last year. Next up? Ana Ortiz, who plays Betty’s sister, Hilda, is expecting a baby girl in June.
Ugly Betty star America Ferrara is the latest Hollywood star to publicly oppose a measure that would ban gay marriage in California. She has appeared with co-stars Tony Plana and Ana Ortiz on Spanish language TV stations in an advert for No on Prop 8. The statewide ballot on election day next Thursday seeks to overturn the state Supreme Court's ruling in May that same-sex couples are legally entitled to marry.
Internet companies Google and Apple, powerhouses of the California economy, have also backed the campaign to defeat Proposition 8.
Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg have both donated funds to No on Prop 8.
Yesterday California's senior United States Senator, Dianne Feinstein, appeared in an ad for the group. "It changes our constitution, eliminates fundamental rights, and treats people differently under the law," she said.
"We are so moved to have the strong, trusted and independent voice of Senator Feinstein joining the chorus of those voting no on 8," said No on Prop 8 Campaign Director Patrick Guerriero. "California voters know that Senator Feinstein speaks from the heart and it matters when she urges voters to reject this unfair initiative."
Earlier this week Maria Shriver, the wife of Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger, publicly expressed her support for same-sex marriage in the state.
Last week a Public Policy Institute of California found Proposition 8 losing 52% to 44% among likely voters.
4% are undecided. In polls taken in August and September by the institute found double digit leads for opponents of the measure.
Proposition 8 would amend the state Constitution to "eliminate right of same-sex couples to marry."
In May the California Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriages in the state. The Court voted 4 to 3 to strike down the ban.
Opponents of gay marriage raised more than a million signatures to place the initiative on the November ballot.
