American Idol fans remember her as season 7′s tattooed Irish contestant from San Diego who was sent home too soon, finishing sixth in the competition that David Cook went on to win. But to Carly Smithson fans, she’s now lead singer of We Are the Fallen.
“Life since Idol has definitely changed for me,” Smithson, 26, said to People Magazine. “I get to tour around the world and play the record of my dreams to people on a nightly basis. Life is great. I’m living the dream!”
Part of that dream includes the release of the band’s first album, Tear the World Down, out Tuesday. The album, which Smithson says is the “soundtrack of some of our recent life experiences,” features “a wall of guitars, epic choirs and orchestra, beautiful pianos and soaring vocals.”
Fans have already gotten a taste of the band’s single “Bury Me Alive.”
As for the track — and the others on the album — Smithson says, “I don’t play an instrument so I focus on melody and lyrics.” But she stops short of telling the story behind the song. “All of our songs have personal meanings to us but we prefer to allow our listeners to have their own take on them,” she says. “It’s a more interesting way to listen to a song and connect to the lyrics.”
Smithson says it’s difficult to keep up with American Idol now that she’s on the road, living out of a bus with 11 guys. “Everyday is a horror movie marathon for them so it’s hard to catch the show,” she says. Still, she is rooting for one of the top five contestants. “Big Mike actually sang at my best friends wedding in New York last Christmas before he was on Idol,” she says. “Over 100 people flew over from Ireland for the event and ran amuck, so I’m routing for him.”
And she offered some advice for another female contestant with a huge voice who left the show just shy of the top 5, Siobhan Magnus: “Work really hard and use every minute given to pursue your dream,” she says. “Idol is a huge opportunity even if you don’t win but it’s up to the individual to use the platform and not wait for anyone to hold your hand or write your songs. No fate but what we make!”
