Kellan Lutz is following in a proud tradition of actors who've loomed, in giant size, over city streets in their underwear – and he wouldn't mind emulating one of those actors in particular.
"I could only hope and pray that I could have a career like Mark Wahlberg," the Twilight vampire and star of Calvin Klein's latest underwear campaign tells The New York Times.
Lutz, 25, is showing off his ripped physique on giant CK billboards in New York and L.A. nearly 20 years after Wahlberg, 38, did the same – before going on to a successful acting career that has included an Oscar nomination for The Departed.
Lutz's ad is meant to explicitly evoke Wahlberg's original, but Lutz says it took a lot of work to get things just right. He worked with a trainer to bulk up his legs, stopped eating candy and used his acting chops to perfect his casual but beckoning pose.
"You have to look like you enjoy what you're selling," he says. "It doesn't look that hard, but a lot of people don't think about what goes into it."
It seems to be having the desired effect – on almost everyone. "I won't lie about it," he says. "I started getting text messages and calls from producers, and when I went into meetings for scripts, people were always commenting on the billboard and asking for pictures for their daughters."
