Tom Cruise to Play 'Rock n' Roll God' in New Movie

Tom Cruise has signed up to play aging musician Stacee Jaxx in the big screen adaption of the hit musical Rock of Ages, and director Adam Shankman is sure his performance is going to impress everyone.

The actor has been taking voice lessons for his role and has been studying the '80s rock songs in the musical to make sure he gets everything right.

Adam told Access Hollywood: “I think we’re going to see him every drop the rock ‘n’ roll god! I’m very excited. He’s so committed to doing it. He’s pouring himself in this part in a way I’ve never had an actor do … it’s pretty intense.”

Tom will have to perform several songs in the film, including Styx’s "Renegade," Bon Jovi’s "Wanted Dead or Alive" and a duet of Foreigner’s "I Want To Know What Love Is," possibly with Anne Hathaway, who is set to play the character Sherrie.

Shankman also confirmed rumors Russell Brand is in talks to join the cast as Lonny, the manager of The Bourbon rock club, while Alec Baldwin is set to play Lonny’s boss Dennis.

He added: “We are talking to Alec Baldwin and there may be some Russell Brand. I can only say at this point that there may be, because the deals aren’t closed."

Gwyneth Paltrow Considering Rock Of Ages Role

Gwyneth Paltrow has confirmed she's considering using her new-found singing skills to tackle a role in the upcoming movie adaptation of hit Broadway musical Rock Of Ages.

The show, which features songs from artists including Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister and Poison, is set for a cinematic make-over with Tom Cruise in talks to join the project.

Paltrow has now revealed she's also considering signing up, after proving her musical prowess in new movie Country Strong.

She tells Entertainment Weekly, "It sounds cool. I just got the script and I will read it on the plane home tomorrow. But it sounds like it could be fun."

Alec Baldwin is also reportedly in negotiations to join the cast, while producer Jenno Topping remains hopeful that Tom Cruise will make his involvement official: "(He is) in discussions. It's real. Although, it is not cemented."

Paparazzi!: Honorable Mention

Alec Baldwin dons a royal purple graduation gown as the guest of honor during NYU's commencement ceremony Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

Betty White's Next Gig: Hosting the Oscars?

Is Betty White the new Neil Patrick Harris?

Not content with her stellar performance on last weekend's Saturday Night Live, fans have launched a new Facebook campaign to place White at the podium come next year's Oscar night.

As of Wednesday morning, more than 9,200 members have jumped on the "Betty White to Host the Oscars" bandwagon. (Nearly 12,000 members, if one counts all the Betty White Oscar Host Facebook pages so far.)

White, 88, landed the SNL hosting gig after a fervent Facebook campaign by her legion of fans. Given her popularity and good reviews for last Saturday's performance – not to mention the fact she helped deliver the 35-year-old NBC show's best ratings in 18 months – this new crusade might attract even larger numbers.

Should the Motion Picture Academy not bite, a secondary, somewhat less vocal (for now) Facebook campaign is also underway, for White to host the primetime TV Emmys.

Either way, White has not yet indicated whether she'd be game to host the Oscars, though she did joke in advance promos for her SNL appearance that her fans should start blogging.

The 2011 Academy Awards are slated to be held February 27th, one week earlier than this year's ceremony, which was co-hosted by youngsters Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Carol Burnett for SNL?

Meanwhile, another Facebook campaign is blossoming for still another favorite from TV's golden past – Carol Burnett. Fans are pressing SNL producer Lorne Michaels to let the popular redhead, 77, host the show. As of Wednesday morning, that army was more than 50,000-strong.

"Icing on the cake would be a cameo appearance by TIM CONWAY!" posts one admirer.

But as the killjoy New York Times points out, Burnett should be in no rush. This coming weekend will bring the SNL season finale, to be hosted by Baldwin.

Alec Baldwin Gave Up Law Studies for Acting

Alec Baldwin had a back-up career planned if he didn't find success acting - he wanted to be a lawyer.

The 30 Rock star, who will host the Academy Awards on Sunday night, spoke to a room of aspiring attorneys at New York's Fordham Law School on Wednesday night.

Revealing his doubts about the profession, he explained: "I didn't know if I wanted to join a field that was becoming as crowded and choked as law was."

But Baldwin, whose three younger brothers, Daniel, Billy and Stephen, all followed him into acting, admits being a lawyer could have helped his troubled Hollywood family.

He adds, "I'd probably be representing them (my brothers) right now. But I do think they saw me acting and thought, 'If he can do it, we can do it.' More accurately, maybe it would be, 'if s**thead can do it, we can do it.'"

Daughter Ireland Dialed 911 When Alec Baldwin Didn't Answer Phone

Ireland Baldwin couldn't reach her father Alec Baldwin, so the worried teen dialed 911, her uncle, Don "Skip" Basinger, said to People magazine.

The 14-year-old was in L.A. and her father was at his Manhattan apartment when they quarreled by phone on February 11th, according to Basinger, the brother of Alec's ex Kim Basinger.

"Ireland was talking to her dad and they got into an argument," says Skip Basinger. "He got upset. She tried to call him back and she couldn't reach him, so she called 911."

Alec Baldwin was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital before being released just hours later. A source tells AP that he had threatened to take pills.

Basinger didn't know whether Ireland was worried Baldwin would harm himself.

"It was a simple little thing, a misunderstanding," Basinger says about his niece's decision to call for help. Baldwin and Ireland "talk all the time," he says.

"Ireland calls him, he calls her. Ireland loves her dad. But kids and their dads are always arguing. Have you ever tried to raise a [teenager?]

He says Baldwin has better control of his famous temper. "After the incident with the voicemail, he learned to restrain himself."

Stephen Baldwin: 'Alec is Doing Great'

Stephen Baldwin has reassured fans of his brother Alec, insisting the 30 Rock star is feeling "great" after his early morning dash to hospital on Thursday.

Paramedics transported Alec Baldwin to a New York hospital after receiving a 911 call, believed to have been made by his 14-year-old daughter Ireland, from his Manhattan apartment.

He was released after a brief check-up and his representative subsequently insisted the hospital visit had been one big "misunderstanding", amid rumours the actor had been intoxicated.

In a statement released on Thursday, Baldwin's spokesman, Matthew Hiltzik, said, "This was a misunderstanding on one person's part. Alec was quickly released from the hospital; he's completely fine and will be at work today."

Hiltzik added that "absolutely no drugs or alcohol" were involved in the incident.

Now born-again Christian Stephen has spoken out to further dismiss fears for his older brother's health.

Describing the hospital admission as a "miscommunication", he tells Extra, "He's great. Everything's fine... There was nothing weird, nothing stupid."

Ireland is Alec Baldwin's daughter with ex-wife Kim Basinger. »

Alec Baldwin Goes to Work After Brief Hospital Stay

Alec Baldwin wasted no time getting back to work Thursday on 30 Rock, the same day he was rushed to a hospital after his daughter reportedly called 911.

But Baldwin, 51, was only at Lenox Hill Hospital for an hour before being released. He later went to the set of his NBC hit show at Silvercup Studios in Queens, New Yorl.

A source close to Baldwin said that drugs or alcohol were not behind the reason for his brief trip to the hospital.

His rep, Matthew Hiltzik, downplayed the incident and predicted it wouldn't prompt Baldwin to call out sick. "This was a misunderstanding on one person's part," Hiltzik said in a statement Thursday. "Alec was quickly released from the hospital, he's completely fine and will be at work today."

Baldwin is due to co-host the Oscars with Steve Martin on March 7th.

Alec Baldwin Rushed to Hospital

Alec Baldwin ended up in a New York hospital Wednesday night after his 14-year-old daughter, Ireland, called 911 from the 30 Rock double Emmy winner's West Side Manhattan apartment, WNBC News reported early exclusively Thursday morning.

The status of Baldwin's condition, as well as what sort of episode triggered the incident, was not divulged, but the TV news program Today in New York said that the actor, 51, agreed to be taken to the hospital and examined. He was later released.

Besides the Emmy-winning NBC best comedy series, Baldwin also stars in the big-screen romantic comedy It's Complicated with Meryl Streep and Steve Martin, with whom he is due to co-host the Oscars on March 7th.

The Hangover & Avatar Win Golden Globes

Rain from the skies over Southern California and tears from an emotional Meryl Streep could not dampen spirits at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 67th annual Golden Globes Awards from Los Angeles on Sunday.

Streep won her leading actress award for Julie & Julia and compared the indomitable spirit of her mother to that of master chef Julia Child, whom the acclaimed actress plays in writer-director Nora Ephron's movie.

The Blind Side star Sandra Bullock won the dramatic leading actress Globe for her portrayal of the real-life Leigh Anne Touhy, who brought a homeless high-school student into her family. Bullock said that the Touhys taught her that a family is made up of those who have your back, and she thanked husband Jesse James for having hers.

She also told her American family to put down the Makers Mark, and her German family – in perfect German – to brush their teeth and go to bed.

Robert Downey, best actor for the comedy Sherlock Holmes, thanked his wife Susan for telling him Matt Damon would win. Dramatic acting winner Jeff Bridges, for Crazy Heart, told the audience as it rose to its collective feet, "You're really screwing up my under-appreciated status."

Though the Globes – which honor both TV shows and movies – are not considered an accurate barometer of the Oscars to come, other notable winners on Sunday were supporting actors Mo'Nique in Precious and Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds, best comedy picture The Hangover, best dramatic picture Avatar and its director James Cameron.

Cameron said he thought his ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow, would, in fact, win the director award, for her Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker. "She deserved it," he said.

An Emotional Mo'Nique

Mo'Nique was the first winner of the night, as best supporting actress in a movie, for Precious. Shaking as she clutched her award, the actress, comedian and talk-show host said, "First let me say, thank you God for this amazing ride that you're allowing me to go on. I'm shaking, but I tell you all, I am in the midst of my dream."

The movie itself, a bitter drama about a Harlem teen, went into the evening with three nominations, though the night's frontrunner, Up in the Air starring George Clooney, had six nods.

Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds took the honors for its bloodcurdling Nazi Hans Landa, played by Austrian actor Christoph Waltz, named best supporting actor in a movie.

Four-time nominee Toni Collette took home the night's first Globe for leading actress in a comedy TV series, for The United States of Tara. During a previous time at bat, the Australia-born star said she was "on the loo and totally missed" her category.

Another four-time nominee, Dexter star Michael C. Hall, was honored as the best actor in a dramatic series. Sporting a knit cap, as he is finishing treatment for cancer, Hall thanked his colleagues, for their "incredible collaborative energy"; his wife, actress (and Dexter costar) Jennifer Carpenter; and another family member. "Hi, mom," he said.

First-time winner Julianne Margulies, best leading actress in the dramatic series The Good Wife, acknowledged some of her sister nominees, saying "Glenn Close – I would bow down, but the dress would rip." She also thanked CBS chief Les Moonves "for believing in the 10 o'clock drama."

Actress nominees Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange helped collect the Globe for Grey Gardens, named best TV movie for the drama about Jacqueline Kennedy's eccentric Bouvier family cousins. Barrymore, accompanied by Justin Long, was eventually named the winning lead actress in a TV movie.

She apologized for being flustered as she made her acceptance speech – especially because "I've been in the room since I was 7 years old" – and thanked her producer "for taking a chance on me."

Alec Baldwin, it was announced, was at a benefit event and not able to collect his Globe as 30 Rock's best leading actor in a comedy series. For once, that NBC series did not win as top sitcom. Instead, that honor went to the Fox freshman comedy Glee, whose award, said its producer and co-creator Ian Brennan, was dedicated "to anyone who ever got a wedgie in high school."

Repeating its Emmy victory, Mad Men won for dramatic TV series.

Sir Paul McCartney presented the best animated feature award, noting, "Animation is not just for children. It is also for adults who take drugs." And the winner was Disney and Pixar's Up.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro helped pay tribute to modern master Martin Scorsese, this year's Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award winner. DeNiro likened the pairing of himself and his frequent director to an old married couple who still love each other but who stopped sleeping together.

As Nicole Kidman pointed out at the start of the show, stars wore special ribbons to the banquet to promote the message to help with the relief operation in Haiti.

Host Ricky Gervais opened the program with a PG-13-rated monologue in which he discussed plastic surgery on his penis, and how he wished he were holding his own instead of hosting the show at that moment. After also taking good-natured swipes at Steve Carell, Kiefer Sutherland and Angelina Jolie, he said, "Let's get on with it, before NBC replaces me with Jay Leno."

The full list of winners is:

Alec Baldwin: 'Retirement Comments Were Misconstrued'

Alec Baldwin is angry at reports he's set to quit Hollywood for good in 2012, insisting his comments in a recent magazine interview have been misconstrued.

The 51 year old reportedly planned to walk away from the spotlight when his contract on hit TV comedy 30 Rock expires in three years' time after lamenting to Men's Health magazine that he considers himself a "failure".

He was quoted as saying, "I don't have any interest in acting anymore. Movies are part of my past. It's been 30 years. I'm not young, but I have time to do something else.

"It's a difficult thing to say, but I believe it: I consider my entire movie career a complete failure. I'll tell you why. The goal of moviemaking is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that."

But Baldwin insists he has no intention of moving away from showbusiness altogether.

He tells USA Today, "It's ridiculous. What I wanted to say is I wanted to do other things."

And his It's Complicated co-star Meryl Streep is adamant Baldwin will be around for a long time to come.

She adds, "He's not quitting acting. He was just telling me what he is doing next. I can't tell you what it is. I'm just saying, he's not quitting."

Alec Baldwin Likes Morning Sex

Alec Baldwin is a morning sex person, because a little early lovemaking sets him up for the day.

The movie star, who is single after splitting from lawyer girlfriend Nicole Seidel, admits he's not fond of sex at night - because he's normally "comatose".

He tells Men's Journal magazine, "At the end of the day, I'm exhausted... But, in the morning, it helps you get your mind right. You just blow out all your synapses and no matter what happens the rest of the day, nothing bothers you."

Alec Baldwin to Quit Acting in 2012

Alec Baldwin has set a deadline of 2012 to quit acting - because he considers himself a Hollywood "failure".

Baldwin, 51, boasts an Oscar nomination, two Golden Globes and two Emmy Awards, but insists his body of work is nothing to be proud about.

So he's vowed to bow out of showbusiness when his contract on hit sitcom 30 Rock expires in three years' time.

He tells U.S. magazine Men's Journal, "I don't have any interest in acting anymore.

The actor, who has mused about embarking on a political career, currently has at least one more movie coming out - It's Complicated, with Meryl Streep and Steve Martin, which opens in the U.S. on Christmas Day.

Alec Baldwin:
Oscar Hosting Pressure on Steve Martin

Hosting the Oscars for the first time? You won't see Alec Baldwin sweat – yet.

"I am doing it until they change their mind," Baldwin, 51, said at the film Academy's Governors Awards over the weekend. "I do have some preparations, but it is a secret."

Besides, he says, he won't be up there alone. The Emmy-winning star of 30 Rock is co-hosting with Steve Martin, 64, who's done it twice.

"It is all on Steve," joked Baldwin. "Steve Martin has done this before, while for me it is the first time. All the pressure is on Steve Martin."

Baldwin was a surprise attendee at Friday's dinner, where honorary Oscars were handed out to such recipients as screen legend Lauren Bacall and B-movie king Roger Corman.

The 82nd Academy Awards will be broadcast Sunday, March 7th, on ABC from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Steve Martin & Alec Baldwin to Host the Oscars

The search is over – and the Oscars are counting on two wild and crazy guys to host the 82nd Academy Awards.

Let the banter begin: "I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin," says Steve Martin, who will share the stage with the 30 Rock actor.

"I don't play the banjo but I'm thrilled to be hosting the Oscars – it's the opportunity of a lifetime," says Baldwin.

Martin, 64, who hosted the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards, and Baldwin, 51, a 2003 supporting actor nominee for The Coolor, are both multiple hosts of Saturday Night Live. They will follow Hugh Jackman as emcees of the biggest Hollywood award show, which like other award programs has been stung by lower ratings.

"We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars," said show producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic. "Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event."

The 82nd Academy Awards will be broadcast Sunday, March 7th, on ABC from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Alec Baldwin Channels His Feminine Side

With some of Hollywood's most talented, glamorous and iconic females assembled in one room for Elle Magazine's 16th Annual Women in Hollywood tribute, it seemed next to impossible for a man to steal the show. But Alec Baldwin did just that, leaving the ladies rolling in the aisles while serving as the event's first male host.

During Baldwin's Dean Martin-esue stint at the dais, he had the largely female audience women – including Katie Holmes, RenĂ©e Zellweger, Emily Blunt, Julianne Moore, Robin Wright and Julie Andrews – shrieking with laughter as he took aim at a variety of topics.

"I want to assure you that I didn't steal this role from a more qualified woman," Baldwin joked with the crowd at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles Monday night. "There was an audition process. The audition required me to move a couch, fall asleep in front of the TV, and open a particularly stubborn jar of pickles."

He also offered a solution for balancing the salary scales between men and women, one that left Katie Holmes and her mom chuckling at their table: "If Tom Cruise would simply lower his quote by a mere $29 million, my salary would not make a difference. My annual salary is the budget for Altoids on one of Tom's movies."

But he didn't hesitate to poke fun at himself, too.

Skinny Actresses Ribbed

Noting that movie actresses are so skinny that if he had a love scene "I would crush them," Baldwin, 51, revealed that his pal Zellweger "is so tiny, but she's got a big voice. I've been to parties with her and you can hear her voice anywhere, but you can't understand a word she says."

He then proceeded to imitate her with an booming but indecipherable Southern twang that had Zellweger doubled over at her table.

He also joshed about the topics of the day, via a mild dig at the assembled press.

"Tonight the job goes to Julie Andrews," Baldwin said, turning to her. "You have three choices: You can follow Robert Pattinson into the men's room, rush the stage during a Taylor Swift concert and tell her how great Henry Mancini is, or to publicize the Blu-Ray release of The Sound of Music, [or] you can release one of your own grandchildren in a balloon into the air."

And, yes, Lindsay Lohan made an appearance, too – as the butt of a Baldwin joke about how DreamWorks executive Jeffrey Katzenberg is one of most powerful men in show business.

"Even more than Lindsay Lohan's psychiatrist," the host quipped.

Alec Baldwin to Quit Acting in 2012

Movie star Alec Baldwin has set the date he'll retire from acting - March 2012.

The Cooler star insists he'll consider himself a former actor when his current contract on TV show 30 Rock expires in three years.

He tells the new issue of Playboy magazine, "In March 2012, I'll wake up and say, 'What am I going to do now? Am I done?' I think I will be done. I may finish a play or something, but I'm retiring at the wrap party."

And he hopes his decision to walk away from showbusiness will allow him to lead a quiet family life well away from Hollywood.

He adds, "I have this silly fantasy; I get married again, I have a kid. I'd love another shot at that, with everything I've learned.

"My kid's, like, eight, comes home and says, 'Dad, Jimmy's mom says you were a famous actor on TV and in the movies. Is that true?' And I go, 'Yes, Johnny, dad was famous.' I whip out my scrapbooks and my DVDs and say, 'Believe it or not, that's your dad.' And my kid's like, 'You used to be on TV and everything? And now you stay home and just clean the house all day while mom works?' 'That's right, son.'"
