This is about as ugly as it gets, folks.
Say goodbye to Betty Suarez and the stylish staff of Mode magazine. ABC announced Wednesday that Ugly Betty has been canceled.
“We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion,” executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson said in a joint statement. “We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”
Mark Indelicato, who plays Betty’s nephew, Justin Suarez, called working on the show a learning experience. “It’s been an amazing four years,” Indelicato, 15, tells PEOPLE. “I’ve learned so much from the wonderful actors I have worked with. It’s sad to see this come so unexpectedly but I think that we all recognize the tremendous work that we have done — and am very grateful for that.”
The show, which stars Emmy-winner America Ferrera as the style-challenged fashion magazine staffer, is in its fourth season.
Based on the popular Colombian soap Betty la Fea, which has inspired dozens of versions of the show around the world, the ABC hour-long comedy premiered in September of 2006.
But back to the bad news: Betty is about to hang up her poncho for good.
