American Idol Watch: Hollywood Week!

Welcome to Hollywood Week at American Idol!

One-hundred and forty-seven singers made it from the national auditions to the Kodak Theatre, where they were informally enrolled in a boot camp of makeovers and coaching at the start of Tuesday’s Idol episode. The singers also got a little speech from “Copacabana” singer Barry Manilow.
Then, the singers came on and offstage like a musical roller coaster.

Some recognizably good voices got put through to the next day: Lil Rounds, 23; Anoop Desai, 21; Jasmine Murray, 16 (pictured on left); Rose Flack, 17; Jorge Nunez, 20; Jackie Tohn, 28; Jamar Rogers, 26, and his music teacher buddy Danny Gokey, 28 (pictured on right); Jeremy Michael Sarver, 27; David Osmond, 28; Adam Lambert, 26; and Emily Wynne-Hughes, 21.
Punk rocker Emily looked like she was going to be eliminated. At the last second she switched her song choice and sang it terribly, but the judges let her stay, despite their disappointment.

There were a couple surprising survivors into Wednesday’s show: Von Smith, 22, highly theatrical in a Judy Garland way; Nick Mitchell aka Norman Gentle, 27; and Katrina “Bikini Girl” Darrell, 20, who once again wowed Randy and Simon and vaguely sickened Kara and Paula was also not very impressed. Bikini Girl gave the best intro of the night, saying, “I’m the next American Idol because … I am.”

But, just because they survived the first round in Hollywood, does not mean they are safe. Tonight, Hollywood auditions continue with the group singing competitions. Let's see who makes it through this round.

On a personal note, I already have my two favorites for this year's top two competition in May. They are Danny Gokey and Jasmine Murray, which coincidentally that is why I am showcasing their pictures in this posting. Go Danny!!!
