Shutter Island Tops Box Office for Second Week

Martin Scorsese's psychological thriller Shutter Island is driving movie fans crazy - the film has topped the U.S. box office chart for a second consecutive week.

The new movie, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a U.S. marshal investigating the disappearance of a patient at a prison for the criminally insane, has scored another $22.2 million, taking its 10-day total to $75.1 million.

Bruce Willis' police comedy Cop Out debuts at number two with an impressive $18.6 million and horror film The Crazies, a remake of George Romero's 1973 movie, is another new entry at three after taking $16.5 million.

Director James Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar continues to make headlines - the film is in fourth place with earnings of $14 million, taking its total domestic haul to a whopping $706.9 million, more than two months after its release.

Pierce Brosnan's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief rounds out the new box office chart top five.

Shutter Island Sails to Number One at Box Office

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's Shutter Island is thrilling cinemagoers - the movie has topped the U.S. box office chart, taking $40.2 million during its debut weekend.

The director and star's fourth collaboration, which stars DiCaprio as a U.S. marshal investigating the disappearance of a patient at an insane asylum, is the best opening for the pair yet.

Their last Oscar-winning film, The Departed, debuted at $26.9 million in 2006. They previously worked together on Gangs of New York and The Aviator.

Meanwhile, star-studded romantic comedy Valentine's Day slipped to number two, with takings of $17.2 million. The Garry Marshall film, which stars Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher and Bradley Cooper, now boasts a 10-day total of $87.4 million.

James Cameron's Avatar remains strong at three with $16.1 million - two months after its debut. The sci-fi sensation's record-breaking U.S. total tallies in at $687.8 million. Worldwide, the film has taken in $2.47 billion.

Rounding out the top five are Pierce Brosnan's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Benicio Del Toro's The Wolfman, with total earnings of $15.3 million and $9.8 million respectively.
