Jake Gyllenhaal Explains Why He Took the 'Love and Other Drugs' Role

Jake Gyllenhaal was thrilled when he came across the script for Love and Other Drugs because, at the time, he was questioning love in his own life. Since then, he's cozied up with Taylor Swift so we doubt he's still asking those same questions these days...

He told BANG Showbiz: “I just think there comes a time in different people’s lives where they say do I have real love? Do I want real love? What is real love? With the script I seemed to be in a time when that was a pressing question. “

Jake felt such a deep connection with the movie that he broke down in tears when he first read the script as it was so close to his frame of mind at the time.

He explained: “With this, I very rarely have a moment where I get excited and I go, ‘Somebody wrote this for me and they don’t know it.’ And I felt that way when I read this the first time and I was loving the character at first and then I was crying at the end because I felt like when he says, ‘Sometimes your life doesn’t go the way you expect it too,’ and usually it doesn’t. And if you follow life and not really think it should be that way then it’ll all work out in the end. That just really moved me to the core and I couldn’t not do it.”

Jake Gyllenhaal Feels Like an 'Old Hand' at Onscreen Nudity

Jake Gyllenhaal strips off for his latest role alongside actress Anne Hathaway in Love and Other Drugs, but he's used to the onscreen awkwardness by now.

He explained: "It's uncomfortable when you're naked on set, but I do feel like an old hand at it at this point. I've done some pretty crazy things already. My parents taught me to feel comfortable about my body. They told me there's a beauty in whatever you are.

"Also, I feel it's very important to portray love and sex in the right way. Besides, in our case, we'd already had faux movie sex in Brokeback Mountain. So we were relatively comfortable."

Jake also admitted the untimely death of his Brokeback Mountain co-star Heath Ledger is something which affected him a great deal.

He added to Live magazine: "I do miss him. There was an intimacy that we all shared on that film -- I'd never experienced anything like it. It was just us by this river in Calgary for a month, in the middle of nowhere.

"There were no hotels to stay in so we lived in trailers out there in the wilds. We would make coffee together in the morning, eat together and sometimes we'd ride horses to work. We were out there alone and all we had was each other."

Jake Gyllenhaal & Anne Hathaway Go Nude for Entertainment Weekly Cover

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway take it all off for three different Entertainment Weekly covers this week to promote their new movie, 'Love and Other Drugs'--and the result is undeniably eye-catching.

The two stars go sans clothing in their upcoming R-rated film--so it seemed fitting to carry that theme over to the cover. Photographer James White, who shot the cover, said the co-stars got along very well and weren't too embarrassed to have some naked time.

"I thought they'd be a little more tense about it than they were, but it was surprisingly low-key. I guess after making a movie like that with each other, it's not too big of a deal," he said.

In the accompanying Entertainment Weekly article, Hathaway admitted to feeling a little nervous about going nude in the film but said she got used to it by the end of filming. "There is that revoltingly embarrassing moment when you have to take your clothes off in front of strangers," Hathaway confessed.

"I mean, I don't go to the beach in a bikini for a reason. So I thought, 'Okay, I'm going to be in control. I'm going to do everything properly, disrobe at the last minute, and in between shots get the clothes back on.' But then I found that every time I put my robe back on, it rubbed all the body makeup off, and that added 20 minutes to filming," she said.

"As with all things in life, the second you stop making it about you and you make it about everyone else, it just got, dare I say, fun," Hathaway concluded.

Love and Other Drugs opens in theaters on November 24th.

Movie Trailer: "Love and Other Drugs" with Jake Gyllenhaal & Anne Hathaway

On November 24th, the long awaited reunion of Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway on "Love and Other Drugs" comes to a theater new you. Jake and Anne last starred together on Brokeback Mountain, my favorite movie of all times.

Here's the latest trailer where we have the pleasure of getting a glimpse of Jake's "boning-up" affect due to the little blue pill.

Jake Gyllenhaal Gets More Naked Than Ever Before

"I was naked a lot in the movie. I was naked in more of it than was even in the final cut. A director's cut? I don't even know how that would be rated."

Jake Gyllenhaal, 29, in the December British edition of Esquire, about stripping off for his new movie with Anne Hathaway, Love And Other Drugs, out November 24th.
